A maioria dos estudos que analisam microscopicamente a interface entre osso e implante é feita por intermédio da análise do percentual de contato entre estas superfícies, em uma secção sagital central do espécime. Esta técnica de análise poderia não refletir a realidade da interface em toda a periferia do implante. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar, através de uma análise histomorfométrica usando microscopia eletrônica de varredura, uma comparação do percentual de osseointegração da secção central do espécime com a média do percentual de osseointegração de oito secções do implante. Foram utilizados cinco coelhos adultos, onde cinco implantes foram inseridos um em cada tíbia direita de cada animal. Três meses após a cirurgia, os animais foram sacrificados e os implantes removidos juntamente com tecido ósseo vizinho e preparados para análise da interface osso/implante, através de microscopia eletrônica de varredura, em um aumento de 100 vezes. A porcentagem de osseointegração foi calculada para cada implante. O teste t de Student foi utilizado para calcular a possível significância estatística dos resultados da secção histológica central do espécime versus a média de um total de oito secções. Os resultados não apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas (P > 0,05). Conclui-se que o uso da secção histológica central de um espécime contendo implante e osso pode ser usado para análise do percentual de osseointegração de todo implante.

Most of the studies that microscopically examine the interface between bone and implant are carried out by analyzing the percentage of the contact between these surfaces at a central, sagital specimen section. This method could not reflect the reality of the interface across the complete implant periphery. The aim of the present study, , is to compare the percentage of osseointegration of the central section of the specimen with the average data analyzed from 8 sections of the same implant through a histomorphometric analysis. Five implants inserted in each of the right tibia of 5 adult rabbits were used. The animals were sacrificed three months after surgery. The implants and the surrounding bone were removed and prepared for scanning electron microscopy analysis of the bone-implant interface at 100X magnification. The percentage of osseointegration was calculated for each implant. The Student t test was used to calculate the possible statistical significance of the data collected from the central section of the specimen versus the mean average of the other eight sections. As the results showed no statistically significant differences (P> 0.05), it was concluded that histomorphometric data from the central section of bone-implant interface could be utilized to quantify the percentage of osseointegration of the whole implant.
